Nov 23 Swingin’ Wednesdays: Last Night at Nyohs!

As many of you heard last week, November 23 will be the last Swingin’ Wednesdays at our weekly venue, Nyohs Buckeye Bar and Grill. Please join us as we say goodbye to a venue that has supported the growth of our local dance scene for almost six years.

Our Executive Board is working to find a new venue for the remaining 2016 weekly dances, beginning November 30. Return to our website and Facebook for venue updates.

In the meantime, our Music Coordinator, Mark Calkins, pulled up some fantastic statistics about our relationship with Nyohs over the last five and a half years:

2011

We began dancing at Nyohs on May 11, 2011. We hosted 34 dances.

2012

We hosted 52 dances and invited the Solomon Doulgas’ Swingtet for our first live band night.

2013

We hosted 51 dances with 3 live bands including:
  • Dave Greer’s Classic Jazz Stompers
  • Keith Jones & the Makeshifts
  • John Vermeulen Swing Orchestra

This also began our 1st annual Thanksgiving Eve Dance.

2014

We hosted 51 dances with 11 live bands including:
  • Keith Jones & the Makeshifts (2x)
  • Dave Greer’s Classic Jazz Stompers (3x)
  • Woody Pines
  • Perserverence Jazz Band (2x)
  • Blue Lunch
  • John Vermeulen’s Swing Orchestra (2x)

We hosted our 2nd annual Thanksgiving Eve Dance with the John Vermeulen Swing Orchestra.

2015

We hosted 52 dances with 3 live bands* including:
  • Chelsea Reed and the Fairweather Five
  • John Vermeulen’s Swing Orchestra (2x)

We hosted our first open house to inform our local dance community about all the services SwingColumbus provides. We also hosted our 3rd annual Thanksgiving Eve Dance with the John Vermeulen Swing Orchestra.

* Our music coordinator got married, bought a house, and co-managed our two flagship weekend events this year!

2016

We hosted 47 dances with 11 live bands including:
  • Jessy Carolina & The Hot Mess
  • Anna Cecilia and the Big Time
  • Chelsea Reed and the Fairweather Five
  • Blue Lunch
  • Moonshine Rhythm Club
  • 9th Street Stompers (3x)
  • John Vermuelen’ Swing Orchestra (2x)

We moved our progressive lesson series to this venue. This means we had  47 progressive lessons and/or crash courses.

We hosted our second open house and our first “Bands-giving” in November, which culminated with our 4th annual Thanksgiving Eve Dance with the John Vermeulen Swing Orchestra.

The Thanksgiving Eve Dance is our final night at the current Nyohs location.

    Includes progressive lessons, beginner drop-in lessons, and crash courses

Thank you to the Nyohs management and their bartending and kitchen staff for hosting us for almost six years! Thank you to our live bands, DJs, and volunteers for helping us run a weekly dance that continues to delight our local dancers. Please join us for our last night at Nyohs! *

Haven’t danced before? No Problem! There’s a beginner lesson that will get you started to dance the rest of the night. No partner necessary!

8:00 – 11:00 PM: Dancing to John Vermuelen’s Swing Orchestra
