January 31: Learn Tandem Charleston with SwingColumbus

Join SwingColumbus for their one night only crash course in partnered Tandem Charleston! No partner required, but bring your friends so we have a full class!

Tandem Charleston is also sometimes called “front-to-back Charleston.” It is one of the most recognizable moves in the Charleston dance repertoire and has some really fun variations you can play with!

Prior experience with 1930’s Charleston desired. The Tandem Charleston is built on top of the 1930’s style Charleston basic. See below for an example from Uptown Swing, a great group of dancers and instructors in Minneapolis, MN.

Join SwingColumbus for their January monthly lesson series! This 4-week lesson series are held THURSDAYS in January 2019. No partner required! The famous flapper of the 1920’s danced the “Charleston”. This is a great dance for older, faster music and a great dance style to have in your pocket. This class series will prepare you to dance socially with swing dancers from Columbus and around the world.

No partner required! We are friendly social group and will rotate partners in class.

This progressive course introduces the fabulous swing dance called Lindy Hop. This class series will prepare you to dance socially with swing dancers from Columbus and around the world.

No partner required! We are friendly social group and will rotate partners in class.

This class series is designed for dancers who never taken a class with SwingColumbus or less than 4 Lindy Hop series classes with us. No partner is required in order to take this class.

Dec 6 Learn Solo Jazz with SwingColumbus

Join SwingColumbus for their one night only crash course in solo jazz movements! No partner required!

This solo jazz class is based on the Big Apple routine. This routine, put together by Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers from the 1930s and passed down through generations, has some of the most iconic and storied moves. You will learn moves like the shim sham, gaze afar, apple jacks and breezy knees.

Learn a piece of our Lindy hop history and strengthen your lindy hop improv vocabulary!

Holiday Edition of SwingColumbus on a Saturday Night

SwingColumbus hosts Saturday Night Swing roughly once a quarter with a focus on a drop-in dance lesson, great dancing, fantastic music, and a special feel to provide a complementary weekend dancing experience to weekly Swingin’ Tuesdays dance and lesson.

This dance is held at the Fourth Avenue Christian Church building in the lower-level ballroom.

Pre-Dance Cookie Baking and Decorating!

Join us Saturday afternoon at Shannon’s house north of Columbus to bake and decorate cookies! Shannon is the current president of the SwingColumbus board.

“We thought we would bake some holiday cookies to have on hand for the dance in the evening. Come on over and catch the holiday spirit, help decorate some cookies, and maybe sample a few as well!

The oven will be on—bring a batch to make and share at the dance, bring your favorite edible decorations, or just come to lend a hand.”

Dec 2 & 5 Team SwingColumbus Auditions!

You are invited to audition for the competitive Team SwingColumbus, a local lindy hop tradition since 2007!

Watch Team SwingColumbus through the years, starting with our most recent performance at the Dayton Swing Smackdown “Battle of the Swing Cities” performance, to get an idea of how we strut our stuff!

Audition Details

You only need to attend ONE audition date to try out.

Want to join the team? Consider these questions:

1. Do you regularly dance lindy hop and take classes or attend workshops to improve your skills?
2. Do you want to work with other growing dancers in the Columbus scene on technique and performance skills?
3. Do you want to be a part of a team putting together a fun, energetic performance? See past team performances by searching for the SwingColumbus channel on YouTube.
4. Can you commit to a regular practice schedule? Please read the schedule details below for necessary commitment.

We have spots available for both performers and apprentice roles on the team. The number of dancers selected is not predetermined and will depend on factors including lead/follow balance, dancing skills, and performance abilities.

Auditions will include learning and small-group performance of short pieces of lindy hop and solo jazz choreography as well as social partner dancing. No partner is required for auditions.

Team Expectations

Team Practice Schedule

Team SwingColumbus is a competition dance team that practices in January and February to prepare a choreographed performance at the Dayton Swing Smackdown “Battle of the Swing Cities.” Team practices will be held from January 3rd to February 23rd, every:

• Sundays // 4 PM – 8 PM
• Wednesdays // 7 PM – 9 PM

Team members are required to attend nearly all practices during team season and to attend the Dayton Swing Smackdown on February 23rd for competition. Please check that your schedule does not have significant conflicts with the times above before committing to participate in the team.

Costs to Participate

Participating in the team, like any adult sport, is voluntary and does have costs. Those costs include:

• $25/month team dues to help cover cost of practice room rental coming to a total of $50. (January & February)
• Cost of ticket to Dayton Swing Smackdown
• Cost of performance costume, including shoes. Efforts are made to keep costume costs as low as possible.
• All team members are required to become members of SwingColumbus.
• If cost is too high, accommodations may be possible. Contact Gail Clendenin for more information.

Compensation

No team leaders or choreographers are compensated for their work with the team. Everyone volunteers their time and skill.
