Due to our weekly venue, Nyohs Buckeye Bar & Grill, closing and moving to a new location (to be announced after the new year), all Swingin’ Wednesdays for December 2016 are cancelled. Visit our website and Facebook for venue updates.

Nov 23 Swingin’ Wednesdays: Last Night at Nyohs!
As many of you heard last week, November 23 will be the last Swingin’ Wednesdays at our weekly venue, Nyohs Buckeye Bar and Grill. Please join us as we say goodbye to a venue that has supported the growth of our local dance scene for almost six years.
Our Executive Board is working to find a new venue for the remaining 2016 weekly dances, beginning November 30. Return to our website and Facebook for venue updates.
In the meantime, our Music Coordinator, Mark Calkins, pulled up some fantastic statistics about our relationship with Nyohs over the last five and a half years:
2011 |
We began dancing at Nyohs on May 11, 2011. We hosted 34 dances. |
2012 |
We hosted 52 dances and invited the Solomon Doulgas’ Swingtet for our first live band night. |

Dec 10 St. Louis Shag Crash Course

Join us as we welcome guest instructors Kerry Kapaku and David Deenik, recent World Champions of St. Louis Shag to a special SwingColumbus crash course! This crash course will last four hours and will get you doing St. Louis Shag with the best of them.
Don’t know about St. Louis Shag? This dance is making a resurgence thanks to the hard work of St. Louis dancers Christian Frommelt and Jenny Shirar, who have been teaching yearly at our big fall workshop, Rocktober. Christian and Jenny brought St. Louis Shag to the world by featuring it at their event, the Nevermore Jazz Ball. Don’t be left behind!

Dec 10 SwingColumbus on a Saturday Night
Welcome to the December edition of Saturday Night Swing by SwingColumbus! This dance is held at the Fourth Avenue Christian Church building in the lower-level ballroom.
This dance features three of our awesome DJs spinning holiday and vintage tunes for you. This is a special night and we encourage you to wear your fanciest duds and show Columbus how swing dancers throw down!
In honor of the holiday season, SwingColumbus is accepting donated canned food to donate to a local charity (TBD).
SwingColumbus hosts Saturday Night Swing roughly once a quarter with a focus on great dancing, live music, and a special feel to provide a complimentary weekend dancing experience to Swingin’ Wednesdays at Nyoh’s.

Bands-giving 2016! Live Bands Nov 9th, 16th, and 23rd
SwingColumbus is offering THREE Wednesdays of LIVE MUSIC in November!
Haven’t danced before? No Problem!
There’s a beginner lesson that will get you started to dance the rest of the night. Also, no partner needed to come—everyone asks everyone else to dance!
If you can’t make it to the lesson, other dancers are always happy to show you the basics and any moves throughout the night. Even if you don’t want to dance, come watch others on the dance floor while having drinks / food around the bar.
November 9th: Moonshine Rhythm Club (Nashville)
Moonshine Rhythm Club is a gypsy jazz band based out of Nashville, TN. Moonshine Rhythm Club brings you the works – great ambiance, high energy, top-notch showmanship, and an authentic sound that honors American swing and gypsy jazz alike. Raw passionate music, at the highest, most entertaining level, whether played to a crowd of ten or ten thousand, Moonshine Rhythm Club never disappoints.

November 16th: 9th Street Stompers (Chattanooga)
The 9th Street Stompers are an outfit of well-dressed no-counts chopping on acoustic instruments and singing about life, death, love, and liquor. Hailing from Chattanooga, Tennessee, they cull up the musical scenery of an era when the lines between swing, gypsy jazz, blues, rockabilly, and tango weren’t nearly as hard and fast as the drinking and dancing. Steering clear of much of the novelty and kitsch associated with pre-war music, they choose to demonstrate the modern relevance of their chosen medium.

We are excited to bring back John Vermeulen’s Swing Orchestra back for Swing Wednesdays 11/23, just the day before Thanksgiving. Always a favorite with fantastic renditions of classic, vintage swing songs, they stay “in the pocket” and keep us swinging out all night long.

Oct 26 Swingin’ Wednesdays: Halloween Dance!
A pirate? The Wizard of Oz? Magnum PI? The Thrift Shop Video? What are you going to wear to the Halloween Dance this year?
Whatever it is, come out for ridiculous costumes, Halloween themed music (think Thriller), and a special Soul Train Line to show off your costume!
