Dec 10 SwingColumbus on a Saturday Night

Welcome to the December edition of Saturday Night Swing by SwingColumbus! This dance is held at the Fourth Avenue Christian Church building in the lower-level ballroom.

This dance features three of our awesome DJs spinning holiday and vintage tunes for you. This is a special night and we encourage you to wear your fanciest duds and show Columbus how swing dancers throw down!

In honor of the holiday season, SwingColumbus is accepting donated canned food to donate to a local charity (TBD).

SwingColumbus hosts Saturday Night Swing roughly once a quarter with a focus on great dancing, live music, and a special feel to provide a complimentary weekend dancing experience to Swingin’ Wednesdays at Nyoh’s.

November 2016 Bling Out Your Swingout! 5 Crash Courses with SwingColumbus

This November we’re bringing you a series of one-time-only crash courses, focused on blinging out your swingout!

You must have taken a SwingColumbus Lindy Basics course and have a solid understanding of the swingout to benefit from these courses. Lindy Basics will return in December!

Bands-giving 2016! Live Bands Nov 9th, 16th, and 23rd

SwingColumbus is offering THREE Wednesdays of LIVE MUSIC in November!

Haven’t danced before? No Problem!

There’s a beginner lesson that will get you started to dance the rest of the night. Also, no partner needed to come—everyone asks everyone else to dance!

If you can’t make it to the lesson, other dancers are always happy to show you the basics and any moves throughout the night. Even if you don’t want to dance, come watch others on the dance floor while having drinks / food around the bar.

November 9th: Moonshine Rhythm Club (Nashville)

Join us for a night of dancing with the Moonshine Rhythm Club!

Moonshine Rhythm Club is a gypsy jazz band based out of Nashville, TN. Moonshine Rhythm Club brings you the works – great ambiance, high energy, top-notch showmanship, and an authentic sound that honors American swing and gypsy jazz alike. Raw passionate music, at the highest, most entertaining level, whether played to a crowd of ten or ten thousand, Moonshine Rhythm Club never disappoints.

November 16th: 9th Street Stompers (Chattanooga)

9th Street Stompers are back in town!

The 9th Street Stompers are an outfit of well-dressed no-counts chopping on acoustic instruments and singing about life, death, love, and liquor. Hailing from Chattanooga, Tennessee, they cull up the musical scenery of an era when the lines between swing, gypsy jazz, blues, rockabilly, and tango weren’t nearly as hard and fast as the drinking and dancing. Steering clear of much of the novelty and kitsch associated with pre-war music, they choose to demonstrate the modern relevance of their chosen medium.

Come join us and burn some calories before the feast!

We are excited to bring back John Vermeulen’s Swing Orchestra back for Swing Wednesdays 11/23, just the day before Thanksgiving. Always a favorite with fantastic renditions of classic, vintage swing songs, they stay “in the pocket” and keep us swinging out all night long.

Oct 26 Swingin’ Wednesdays: Halloween Dance!

A pirate? The Wizard of Oz? Magnum PI? The Thrift Shop Video? What are you going to wear to the Halloween Dance this year?

Whatever it is, come out for ridiculous costumes, Halloween themed music (think Thriller), and a special Soul Train Line to show off your costume!

Lindy Basics Lesson Series: 6:30 – 7:20 PM
Lindy Hop is the vintage swing dance of the 1940’s, and now is your chance to learn it from scratch. Viktor Lillard and Reyna Lusson will start with the fundamentals and teach you everything you need to know to start lindy hopping! No experience necessary and no partner necessary! They will teach several of the basic moves, the Swingout, the Lindy circle, with some variations in the later weeks. Many people take the Beginning Lindy Hop session several times, to build confidence with the 8-count basics.

Big Apple Lesson Series: 7: 30 PM – 8:30 PM
Mark Calkins and Shannon Varner will teach you how to dance The Big Apple! Choreographed by Frankie Manning in 1937, this solo dance is filled with high energy Charleston movements and intricate jazz steps. Not only is it danced here in Columbus on occasion, but you are guaranteed to see it at most big swing dance events around the world! But don’t let that intimidate you: Mark and Shannon will be breaking the routine down for you. The instruction is geared toward dancers who are learning or want to learn to solo dance and are interested in learning choreography.

Solo Jazz 2-Part Crash Course Lesson Series: 6:30 – 7:20 PM
Join us for the special two-part August crash course at NYOH’s! Even better, the pricing will include admission to Swingin’ Wednesdays at NYOH’s (including LIVE BAND night on 8/24!) and include the basic swing lesson from 7:30-8:00pm! This means you will be able to practice your dance moves with expert and beginner swing dancers all night!

Daniel Hoy and Ali Lodico will show us everything we need to know to break out with solo jazz moves on the dance floor!
