July 16 SwingColumbus on a Saturday Night with the Don Norman Band

Welcome to the July edition of SwingColumbus on a Saturday Night!

This summer dance will feature the live band Don Norman Band. This is a special night and we encourage you to wear your fanciest duds and show Columbus how swing dancers throw down!

SwingColumbus is hosting the Saturday Night dance roughly once a quarter with a focus on great dancing, live music, and a special feel to provide a complimentary weekend dancing experience to Swingin’ Wednesdays at Nyoh’s.

June 29 ShamWow Your Basics! crash course

This one time crash course will be Wednesday June 29, 2016.

Join us for our June crash course at NYOH’s! Even better, the pricing will include:

• ShamWow Your Basics crash course: 6:30 PM – 7:20 PM
  Clean, buff, and add sparkle to your lindy basics! This crash course is meant for those with some lindy experience who want to polish and finesse their basics to enhance their connection and lead/follow skills. It will help prime you for our Intermediate Lindy series in July if your lindy needs some polishing! Neil Coplin and Binaebi Calkins will review common movements in 8-count basics and help prepare you for building your lindy skills.
• Beginner Swing Dance Lesson: 7:30 PM – 8:00 PM
  East coast swing dance basics will get you social dancing in no time!
• Live Band John Vermeulen: 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM

June 29 LIVE BAND! John Vermeulen’s Swing Orchestra

Another one of our “area favorites” and by far the biggest band that has ever played for us! This ensemble varies in size and in line-up, usually between 13-18 members.  The line-up always consists of many local all-stars musicians, many of which who play for a living as well as teaching music at the college level.  Always a treat to dance to a group with a full Big Band sound!

Haven’t danced before? No Problem! There’s a beginner lesson that will get you started to dance the rest of the night. No partner necessary!

June 8 LIVE BAND! Anna Cecilia & the Big Time

Anna Cecilia is no stranger to SwingColumbus, you may have heard her sing previously at SwinginWednesdays with the Perserverence Jazz Band.

She’s started her own new band that is seriously, stupidly, amazingly swinging. She’s got an all-star roster of players (Solomon Douglas on piano, Brennen Ernst on guitar, trumpet genius Noah Hocker, etc. etc.). They’re even on the roster for this year’s DC Lindy Exchange.

This 4-week lesson series are held WEDNESDAYS in June 1 – 27, 2016.

Even better, pricing includes the basic swing lesson from 7:30 – 8:00 PM AND the dancing at Swingin’ Wednesdays at NYOH’s! This means you can practice your dance moves with expert and beginner swing dancers all night!

You must attend the first class to join the entire series.

• Lindy Basics Lesson Series: 6:30 – 7:20 PM
  Lindy Hop is the vintage swing dance of the 1940’s, and now is your chance to learn it from scratch. Daniel Hoy and Ali Lodico will start with the fundamentals and teach you everything you need to know to start lindy hopping! No experience necessary and no partner necessary!

Hey everyone, quick heads up that we’re switching the College ID night for the month of June!

Usually, we have College ID night on the second Wednesday of the month. This month, it will be the first Wednesday, which is June 1, 2016. Please tell your friends!

College ID night allows students with active student IDs free entry to the SwingColumbus beginner lesson and DJ’d dance.

May 3 Open House! Swingin’ Wednesdays

It’s our annual SwingColumbus open house! We’ll have tons of fun ways for you to learn more about the swing community, and SwingColumbus specifically what we do, and how to get involved! There will be a raffle with prizes that include passes to lessons and regional events, and a Jack & Jill (social dance competition)!

ADMISSION IS FREE!!! It’s exactly $0 to enter, so bring your friends and family and spread the lindy love!

Haven’t danced before? No Problem! There’s a beginner lesson that will get you started to dance the rest of the night. Also, no partner needed to come- everyone will be asking everyone else to dance!

If you can’t make it to the lesson, other dancers are always happy to show you the basics and any moves throughout the night. Even if you don’t want to dance, come watch others on the dance floor while having drinks / food around the bar.

Sunday Practice Sessions: How-To

If you’re a SwingColumbus member, we hope you’ve heard about our free-to-attend Sunday Practice Sessions! From 5-7 every Sunday you can meet up with other Swing Columbus Members at the Ohio Theater to work on your dancing!

If you’re not familiar with working on your dancing in this way, it helps to know how to prepare. One of our amazing board members who is helping to organize these sessions has a couple of points to help you plan ahead and get the most out of every session.

How do I decide what to work on during free practice time?

1. Get advice from people who have done this before.

     – Other dancers you know

     – Rebecca Brightly’s online practice course

     – Bobby White on Beginning Your Swing Dance Education andWays You Can Get Better at Swing Dancing

2. Set some goals for yourself. Ask your fellow practice-sessioners if you don’t know how to practice to accomplish your goal. Some sample goals:

     – Incorporate one thing from the last class I took into my dancing next week.

     – Learn some jazz choreography. The Shim Sham, the Lindy Chorus, and the Big Apple are all done very often at swing dances.

     – Connect better with a particular partner.

     – Increase my repetoir of moves, stylings, solo jazz moves, etc.

     – Hone my style. Mirrors are a great way to know what you look like when you dance. You can also ask a fellow practice-sessioner to video your dancing to watch later.

     – Make finals at a Jack and Jill next year.

So, put your thinking cap on and get excited for Sundays – we’ll see you from 5-7 in practice room 4!
