This solo jazz class is based on the Big Apple routine. This routine, put together by Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers from the 1930s and passed down through generations, has some of the most iconic and storied moves. You will learn moves like the shim sham, gaze afar, apple jacks and breezy knees.

SwingColumbus hosts Saturday Night Swing roughly once a quarter with a focus on a drop-in dance lesson, great dancing, fantastic music, and a special feel to provide a complementary weekend dancing experience to weekly Swingin’ Tuesdays dance and lesson.

Join us Saturday afternoon at Shannon’s house north of Columbus to bake and decorate cookies! Shannon is the current president of the SwingColumbus board.
“We thought we would bake some holiday cookies to have on hand for the dance in the evening. Come on over and catch the holiday spirit, help decorate some cookies, and maybe sample a few as well!
The oven will be on—bring a batch to make and share at the dance, bring your favorite edible decorations, or just come to lend a hand.”

Audition Details
You only need to attend ONE audition date to try out.
Want to join the team? Consider these questions:
Do you regularly dance lindy hop and take classes or attend workshops to improve your skills?
Do you want to work with other growing dancers in the Columbus scene on technique and performance skills?
We have spots available for both performers and apprentice roles on the team. The number of dancers selected is not predetermined and will depend on factors including lead/follow balance, dancing skills, and performance abilities.
Auditions will include learning and small-group performance of short pieces of lindy hop and solo jazz choreography as well as social partner dancing. No partner is required for auditions.

Team Practice Schedule
Team SwingColumbus is a competition dance team that practices in January and February to prepare a choreographed performance at the Dayton Swing Smackdown “Battle of the Swing Cities.” Team practices will be held from January 3rd to February 23rd, every:
Sundays // 4 PM – 8 PM
Wednesdays // 7 PM – 9 PM
Team members are required to attend nearly all practices during team season and to attend the Dayton Swing Smackdown on February 23rd for competition. Please check that your schedule does not have significant conflicts with the times above before committing to participate in the team.
Costs to Participate
Participating in the team, like any adult sport, is voluntary and does have costs. Those costs include:
$25/month team dues to help cover cost of practice room rental coming to a total of $50. (January & February)
Join SwingColumbus for their November monthly lesson series! This 4-week lesson series are held THURSDAYS in November 2018: 1, 8, 15, 29.
No partner required! We will rotate during the lesson so everyone can practice.

The Rehearsal Room is accessed from the breezeway between the Ohio Theater and the Sheraton Hotel.
This progressive course continues to expand on the great swing dance of St Louis Shag. This class series will prepare you to dance socially with swing dancers from Columbus and around the world.
This class series is designed for dancers who have taken 5 or more social Lindy Hop classes with SwingColumbus or elsewhere. Dancers should already know how to the swing out and are confident with the 8-count footwork. It is designed to cover different material than the June lesson series.
No partner required! We are friendly social group and will rotate partners in class.
This progressive course introduces the fabulous swing dance called Lindy Hop. This class series will prepare you to dance socially with swing dancers from Columbus and around the world.

ROCKTOBER: An intensive lindy hop workshop in Columbus, Ohio that’s different from any other event, designed to challenge and improve your dancing.
Delve deep into the world of leading and following through 6 – 8 concentrated hours of instruction with one set of teachers. Focused attention designed to help master movement, concepts and ideas. Video auditions accurately pre-place experienced dancers in tracks with peers of similar dance ability. Intense instruction also offered for open level dancers, no audition required.
So join us in October and dance to our live band, compete in our competitions — including our 60 Seconds of Fame showcase — and take your dance to the next level!
Rocktober relies on a community-based commitment model, where the attendee pays to reserve their spot, and we use — and count on — that payment to make the event happen!
This means we cannot offer full refunds. Instead, you can apply your payment as a credit to next year’s event. The credit applies to you only.
The credit request is good for the following calendar year only.
Solo movement is a great enhancement for your partner dance, and this is a great way to jump into the vocabulary of Lindy Hop and practice some solo jazz dance and learn some of those move you keep seeing on the dance floor.
No partner is required to take this class. All levels welcome. This is a two-hour lesson.

Saturday May 19 Lessons
We’re bringing two amazing instructor sets for a one-day workshop. Hone your lindy hop skills under the expert tutelage of Mandy Hogan and Danny Beyrer from Indianapolis, and Kyra Isaacs and Charlie Weiprecht from Baltimore!
You may self-select your placement for one of the two tracks: Avid Swing Dancer and Experienced Lindy Hopper. Please note our instructors may ask you to switch pending how your dancing aligns with others in your track in order to provide the best instructional experience.
Registration is open on EventBrite now! You’ll love taking classes with Danny, Mandy, Kyra, and Charlie! If you’re unsure about their awesomeness or haven’t heard of them, that’s ok. Let their dancing speak for them!

Finish out your weekend with some awesome hot jazz presented by our sister organization, the Central Ohio Hot Jazz Society! The COHJS is bringing the Dave Kosmyna’s Original Downhome Jazz Band to the Clintonville Woman’s Club. This Toledo area band will perform while you dance or just listen to their music.
Dancers, since hot jazz songs tend to run long, we suggest jumping onto the dance floor a minute or two into the song. This also allows the listening-only audience a chance to watch the band members work their instrumental magic. Please note the floor is small. Keep your dance movements small, watch out for each other and dancers who use the “line of dance” around the edge of the floor, and apologize if you bump into someone.
BYOB, hot food, snacks, soft drinks and coffee available for purchase.

Daniel and Gail will teach Lindy Hop from the beginning. No experience required! This class series is designed for dancers who have taken less than 4 Lindy Hop classes or have never taken a class with SwingColumbus. No partner is required in order to take this class.
Continue your journey to becoming a comfortable lindy hopper with the Lindyroos, Mark Calkins and Shannon Varner! In this series Shannon and Mark will show how you can mix swing patterns seamlessly, while adding new turns and variations to add to your dance tool belt. There will be “new” topics covered in this series!
This class is designated “Beyond Basics”, meaning it is geared to dancers who are looking to move beyond our entry-level beginner classes. Individuals should already be familiar with 8 Count & 6 Count footwork, as well as mechanics of the Swing Out. This class series is designed for dancers who have taken more than 5 social Lindy Hop classes with SwingColumbus or elsewhere. No partner is required in order to take this class.

Quick reminder that Team SwingColumbus will be performing TODAY March 18 at the Clintonville Woman’s Club. We believe the performance is slotted for around 3 PM, during Ragtime Rick & the Chefs of Dixieland band break. Thank you to the Central Ohio Hot Jazz Society for hosting our competition team, and giving our dancers another rehearsal before competing in Knoxville next weekend!
