September 2017 Intro to Lindy Hop & Choreography 101 with SwingColumbus

Join SwingColumbus for their September monthly lesson series! These 4-week lesson series are held THURSDAYS in September 2017. No partner required! We will rotate during the lesson so everyone can practice.

SwingColumbus strongly encourages their students to attend all lessons, as there will be no make-up classes or refunds for classes missed.

You must attend the first class to join the entire series.

Intro to Lindy Hop Series: 6:45 – 7:45 PM
This class is designed for dancers who have taken less than 4 Lindy Hop classes, or have never taken a class with SwingColumbus. Lindy Hop is the vintage swing dance of the 1940’s, and now is your chance to learn it from scratch. Viktor You will start with the fundamentals and learn everything you need to know to start lindy hopping! No experience necessary and no partner necessary! You will learn several of the basic moves, the Swingout, the Lindy circle, with some variations in the later weeks.

Many people take the Beginning Lindy Hop session several times, to build confidence with the 8-count basics.

Choreography 101 Series: 8:00 – 9:00 PM
Want to share your love of dance with more than one person at a time? Interested in being able to plan and practice a dance sequence to showcase your style? Team SwingColumbus captain Gail Clendenin will guide you through this introduction to creating your own choreography.

Depending on each dancers’ background and interest, you might:
– Choreograph a series of moves from other lessons or videos to help you remember your repertoire,
– Plan a short sequence for a jam circle, or
– Create a one-minute “60 Seconds of Fame” routine to perform at Rocktober.

This is a performance class, rather than a social dancing class, and class time will be available for students to work on their individual solo or group performances. Students are encouraged to have a pre-selected partner or group they plan to take the class with, if not working on a solo routine.

This class is designed for dancers who have taken at least a few classes with SwingColumbus.

September 20 LIVE BAND! Moonshine Rhythm Club

 

Live Band Night on September 20th featuring the Moonshine Rhythm Club!

Moonshine Rhythm Club’s sound draws on the guitar-driven, acoustic fire of gypsy jazz, as well as the slow burn and laid-back groove of later artists like Count Basie and Nat “King” Cole. They bring old-school swing & jazz to life as they seek out deep cuts from the 30s and 40s and distill them into their signature sound. http://moonshinerhythmclub.com/

Haven’t danced before? No Problem. A beginner East Coast Swing dance lesson is included in admission and will get you started to dance the rest of the night. No partner necessary.

August 23 LIVE BAND! 9th Street Stompers

 

Live Band Night on August 23rd, featuring the 9th Street Stompers!

The 9th Street Stompers are an outfit of well-dressed no-counts chopping on acoustic instruments and singing about life, death, love, and liquor. Hailing from Chattanooga, Tennessee, they cull up the musical scenery of an era when the lines between swing, gypsy jazz, blues, rockabilly, and tango weren’t nearly as hard and fast as the drinking and dancing. Steering clear of much of the novelty and kitsch associated with pre-war music, they choose to demonstrate the modern relevance of their chosen medium.

August 2017 Beyond Lindy Basics & Intro to 6-Count Lindy Hop with SwingColumbus

Join SwingColumbus for their August monthly lesson series! These 4-week lesson series are held THURSDAYS in August 2017. The lessons will be on Thursdays, starting August 17, with the final lesson being on August 31.

SwingColumbus strongly encourages their students to attend all three lessons, as there will be no make-up classes or refunds for classes missed.

Intro to 6-Count Lindy Hop Series: 6:30 – 7:30 PM
Looking for a gentle way to break into lindy hop, but not ready to leave the wonderful world of 6-count East Coast swing behind? This class is for you! Join Daniel Hoy and Gail Clendenin whether you have taken a lindy hop class before or have never tried it. They will cover dancing to six count patterns within Lindy Hop that you wouldn’t typically see in our Swingin’ Wednesdays drop-in lessons.

Intro to 6-Count Lindy Hop is a three-week progressive series, with each lesson lasting one hour.

Beyond Basics Lindy Hop Series: 7:45 – 8:45 PM
Continue your journey to becoming a comfortable lindy hopper with the Lindyroos, Mark Calkins and Shannon Varner! This three-week series is designed for swing dancers who know how to swing out. This will not duplicate material from Mark and Shannon’s earlier Beyond the Basics class.

Beyond Basics Lindy Hop is a three-week progressive series, with each lesson lasting one hour.

We will be hosting John Vermuelen’s Swing Orchestra for the first time at the Big Room Bar! John Vermeulen’s Swing Orchestra always features many all-star musicians from the area, making them one our favorite bands to dance to and hear!
