January 2017 Progressive Lessons Cancelled

We are moving our progressive lessons back to the Clintonville area!

There are no progressive lessons for January 2017.
Drop-in lessons on Wednesdays shall continue.

As we take the month of January to finalize our contracts with the new venue, we hope you will join us at our weekly Wednesday night dance.

The Wednesday night dance includes a drop-in, half-hour East Coast Swing Dance lesson. This lesson is not progressive. We start from scratch each time, and you get a rotation of instructors teaching you different moves and variations to build your dance vocabulary. No partner required!

After the lesson, stay a while to dance to our DJs for three hours. It’s a great way to get over the mid-week slump!

Don’t forget to join us on December 20th for our last live band Wednesday of the year, featuring the Rick Brunetto Big Band!

December 3 & 5 Try Out for Team SwingColumbus!

Do you want to push your dancing to the next level? Do you dream of learning choreography to compete with a group of advanced dancers to a crowd of cheering fans?

Attend this info session and tryout to get information on how to join Team SwingColumbus!

Team SwingColumbus is a group of swing dancers that practice together twice a week in January and February 2018 to learn and perform a choreographed dance. The team will perform that dance in the Dayton Swing Smackdown on Saturday night, February 24, 2018.

For 2018, Team SwingColumbus is recruiting dancers who have taken at least a couple of classes with SwingColumbus and are regular dancers at Swingin’ Wednesdays. Team members should be excited to improve their dancing and willing to commit to learn and perform with a team.

NO solo performance or memorized choreography will be required. The tryout is coming and participating in the dancing and warm up. NO partner is required!

Welcome to the December edition of Saturday Night Swing by SwingColumbus! This dance is held at the Fourth Avenue Christian Church building in the lower-level ballroom.

This dance features some of our awesome DJs spinning your favorite holiday and vintage tunes for you. We will have a few snacks, and a fun, festive corner to take your #cbushohoho selfies! This is our annual Holiday party and we encourage you to wear your fancy festive duds.

November 2017 Mixing 6+8-Count Lindy Hop with SwingColumbus

Join SwingColumbus for their November monthly lesson series! These 4-week lesson series are held THURSDAYS in November 2017. No partner required! We will rotate during the lesson so everyone can practice.

Classes will be 11/2, 11/9/, 11/16 and 11/30. We will skip the week of Thanksgiving.

Mixing 6+8 Count Lindy Hop Series: 8:00 – 9:00 PM

Continue your journey to becoming a comfortable lindy hopper with the Lindyroos, Mark Calkins and Shannon Varner! In this series Shannon and Mark will show how you can mix 6 and 8 count swing patterns seamlessly within the same dance, while adding new turns and variations to add to your dance tool belt. There will be “new” topics covered in this series!

This class is designated “Beyond Basics”, meaning it is geared to dancers who are looking to move beyond our entry-level beginner classes. Individuals should already be familiar with 8 Count & 6 Count footwork, as well as mechanics of the Swing Out. If you have recently have taken a Lindy series, you are welcome to take this class.

This class is designed for dancers who have taken less than 4 Lindy Hop classes, or have never taken a class with SwingColumbus. Lindy Hop is the vintage swing dance of the 1940’s, and now is your chance to learn it from scratch. You will start with the fundamentals and learn everything you need to know to start lindy hopping! No experience necessary and no partner necessary! You will learn several of the basic moves, the Swingout, the Lindy circle, with some variations in the later weeks.

Many people take the Beginning Lindy Hop session several times, to build confidence with the 8-count basics.

20’s Style Charleston Series: 8:00 – 9:00 PM
The famous flapper of the 1920’s danced the Charleston. You can dance it too with Viktor and Reyna! This is a great dance for older, faster music and a great one to have in your pocket.

This is a social dancing class. No partner and no experience are required. However, students who are new to swing dance should be ready to be challenged.

This class is designed for dancers who have taken at least a few classes with SwingColumbus.

Joe Smith & The Spicy Pickles (Denver, CO) is a nationally touring seven-piece band that is spreading their love for vintage jazz and swing. Supporting their new album ‘Gin & Moonlight’, Joe Smith & The Spicy Pickles will be touring the US during the fall of 2017.

Sept 17 SwingColumbus Summer Celebration!

Depending on each dancers’ background and interest, you might:
– Choreograph a series of moves from other lessons or videos to help you remember your repertoire,
– Plan a short sequence for a jam circle, or
– Create a one-minute “60 Seconds of Fame” routine to perform at Rocktober.

This is a performance class, rather than a social dancing class, and class time will be available for students to work on their individual solo or group performances. Students are encouraged to have a pre-selected partner or group they plan to take the class with, if not working on a solo routine.

This class is designed for dancers who have taken at least a few classes with SwingColumbus.

The 9th Street Stompers are an outfit of well-dressed no-counts chopping on acoustic instruments and singing about life, death, love, and liquor. Hailing from Chattanooga, Tennessee, they cull up the musical scenery of an era when the lines between swing, gypsy jazz, blues, rockabilly, and tango weren’t nearly as hard and fast as the drinking and dancing. Steering clear of much of the novelty and kitsch associated with pre-war music, they choose to demonstrate the modern relevance of their chosen medium.

They will cover dancing to six count patterns within Lindy Hop that you wouldn’t typically see in our Swingin’ Wednesdays drop-in lessons.

Intro to 6-Count Lindy Hop is a three-week progressive series, with each lesson lasting one hour.

Beyond Basics Lindy Hop Series: 7:45 – 8:45 PM

June 14! Special Performance at Swingin’ Wednesdays!

We have a special performance from our Summer Performance group on June 14th!

SwingColumbus’ Summer Performance Group is back! This year Mark Calkins & Shannon Varner taught one of their favorite (and original!) routines, the Cement Mixer routine!

Haven’t danced before? No Problem. A beginner lesson is included in admission and will get you started to dance the rest of the night. No partner necessary.

7:30 – 8:00 PM : Beginner swing dance lesson
8:00 – 11:00 PM : Dance to DJs; special performance around 9:15 PM!

June 2017 Lindy Hop 102 & Charleston 102 with SwingColumbus

Join SwingColumbus for their June monthly lesson series! These 4-week lesson series are held THURSDAYS in June 2017. The lessons will be on Thursdays, starting June 1, with the final lesson being on June 22.

SwingColumbus strongly encourages their students to attend all four lessons, as there will be no make-up classes or refunds for classes missed.

You must attend the first class to join the entire series.

Lindy Hop 102 Series: 6:30 – 7:30 PM
This class is designed to be a great introduction into the style and technique of Lindy Hop. Whether you have taken a lindy hop class before or have never tried it, Lindy 102 will provide you with the foundations you need to swing out! There is no partner required for the series either!

Lindy 102 is a four-week progressive series, with each lesson lasting one hour.

Charleston 102 Series: 7:45 – 8:45 PM
This class is designed to be a great introduction into the style and technique of Charleston. Whether you have taken a lindy hop class before or have never tried it, Charleston 102 will provide you with the foundations you need to get on the dance floor, and kick it up, Charleston style! There is no partner required for the series.

This month SwingColumbus is pleased to have Binaebi Calkins and Mark Vandevender teaching Lindy 101. Both Binaebi and Mark have been members of Team SwingColumbus and bring their unique and joyful styles to their teaching. Lindy 101 is also the starting point for our Lindy 100 series, allows for our students to spread out their learning over three classes. Keep an eye out for Lindy 102 and Lindy 103, coming later in 2017!

Mickey James and the Queen City Crew is a high-energy, 6-piece band whose youthful & nostalgic look and sound will entertain music lovers of all ages, providing the perfect combination of Classic and Contemporary Swing, Jazz, R&B, blues, rock and roll, and many other styles. April Monthly Lesson Series Taster

SwingColumbus is excited to announce that they monthly lesson series will be back in full “swing” in May 2017! Before the big kick off, we wanted to offer all of our dancers a taste of what the lessons will be like by hosting two Tasters.

What is a “Taster?”

This FREE taster event will give the greater swing community an idea of what our monthly series will be like, including:

• Time frame
• Format
• Class level expectation

We hope this taster will help our dancers have a good feel for what to expect from lessons. We also hope to give you a strong idea of the “level” to best fit your current skills.

Early registration for our May series will be available at this event.
All Taster attendees will receive $5 registration!

April 12 LIVE BAND! Moonshine Rhythm Club

Live Band Night on April 12th, featuring the Moonshine Rhythm Club!

Moonshine Rhythm Club brings old-school swing and jazz to life with joyful arrangements and energetic playing that makes this vintage music sound like it was written this morning. The boys seek out deep cuts from the 30s and 40s, take their favorite parts from classic big band recordings, and distill them into their signature sound. That sound draws on the guitar-driven, acoustic fire of gypsy jazz, as well as the slow burn and laid-back groove of later artists like Count Basie and Nat “King” Cole. On top of this lays classy and hip vocals with a lighthearted humor.

Live Band Night on March 15th, featuring the 9th Street Stompers!

The 9th Street Stompers are an outfit of well-dressed no-counts chopping on acoustic instruments and singing about life, death, love, and liquor. Hailing from Chattanooga, Tennessee, they cull up the musical scenery of an era when the lines between swing, gypsy jazz, blues, rockabilly, and tango weren’t nearly as hard and fast as the drinking and dancing. Steering clear of much of the novelty and kitsch associated with pre-war music, they choose to demonstrate the modern relevance of their chosen medium.
